David Sullivan of Sheffield was a late entry to the 3rd round of the Stockton & DMC ironman kart series but his trip from South Yorkhire was well worth it with Pole position and the race win in the bag.
Mild weather conditions and no significant rain in the week leading up to the race meant grip levels were high for the 26 racers. Warren Clough of Norton made a return to the series and took second on the grid followed by reigning champion Chris Roe (Redcar) ahead of Skelton’s Bob McKenzie.
"It was a day for the Underdogs" |
As the flag dropped to start the race McKenzie instatly hit trouble with a stalled engine which left him plumb last and provoking a fine recovery drive to 6th place overall. It was to be a day for the underdogs in the championship and a topsy turvy result has narrowed many gaps in the series table.
Former Champion Colin Peacock pitted after 1 lap to change karts compromising his race into an eventual 11th place, also in the wars was Redcar’s Ste Allan who had an engine failure and a gravel trap excursion when passing a backmarker who failed to see him as he overtook.
At the front Sullivan was never allowed to rest with Roe in close pursuit and Clough ready to pounce if the lead pair tangled. A winning margin of just 1.5 seconds after 30 laps shows this was no easy victory. Clough maintained 3rd but was a further 5 seconds behind. The first 14 runners were all on the lead lap.
In class B (over 86kg), Jonny Mawer from Reeth continued his good form with a clean sweep of class pole, win and fastest lap, as a result it is Mawer who leads the overall championship with 3 rounds to go.
